Located on a peaceful 4-acre property in Langley, B.C., The Happy Herd Farm Sanctuary provides a safe, forever home where rescued animals live out their lives with dignity, kindness, and respect.
How The Herd Began
The vision started in 2012 when co-founders Diane and Stephen shared their property with a small group of companion animals, including horses, an older donkey, rescued auction chickens, and Percy the house pig. After witnessing the slaughter of dolphins, our founder began questioning the ways society distinguishes between animals we love, animals we eat, and animals whose suffering we overlook. Our sanctuary began with a simple but profound realization: the animals we live alongside and the animals we raise for food are not so different in their capacity to experience the world.

In 2013, a week-old calf named Desi arrived as their first official farm rescue, quickly forming an inseparable bond with a tiny piglet named Lucy. A year later, in 2014, two more calves—Scooter and Sparky—joined the family, and Diane and Stephen officially announced their home as The Happy Herd.
Growing Our Impact
As word spread and animal welfare organizations like the SPCA and LAPS entrusted more animals to their care, the sanctuary expanded. In 2018, The Happy Herd officially became a registered charity and opened its doors to public tours and volunteers.
Today, The Happy Herd is the forever sanctuary for over 50 rescued residents—including cows, pigs, goats, sheep, turkeys, chickens, and four friendly felines.
